Get Your Florida Motorcycle License
Ready to take your motorcycle on the open road? This article will take you through the steps to get your Florida motorcycle license.
The Rules
If you wish to operate any two or three wheel motorcycle, whose engine is more than 50 cc, you are required to have a motorcycle endorsement on your driver license or a motorcycle-only license.
Question: What are the requirements to obtain a motorcycle endorsement?
Answer:
- Hold at least a regular Class E operator's driver license.
- If you are at least 21 years old, you can receive your motorcycle endorsement by passing the Motorcycle Knowledge and Skills Test at a driver's license office, tax collector office or third party tester. A GUARANTEED-To-Pass Prep Course is available for just $19.97 by clicking here.
- OR
- If you are at least 21 years old, you may take and complete a motorcycle safety course and provide proof of completion of the course to the DHSMV. Courses are offered at locations around the state and generally cost between $150 and $250. Class schedules and sizes are limited and you are urged to plan ahead to schedule a course. Course providers can be found by clicking here.
- If under 21 years old, show proof of completion of a motorcycle safety course to a driver license office or tax collector office that issues driver licenses. Course providers can be found by clicking here.
- The costs include the $5.00 endorsement fee, plus a license fee (see fees for original, renewals, duplicates, and replacement license), and $5.25 if applying at a county tax collector office.
Prepare for the Written Exam
The Florida DMV requires that all applicants must pass a written motorcycle knowledge test on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques. All motorcyclists are encouraged to study for this written test so you don't take a chance on standing in line at the DMV Office only to go home empty-handed. Paperwork
Before you head to the Florida DMV Office, make sure you have the following required documents to get your motorcycle license. Examples include:
- Birth certificate issued in any state
- Drivers license or instruction permit issued in another state
- U.S. passport
- U.S. military ID card (active duty, retired, reserve)
- Florida ID card
- Social Security Number, if issued
- Documents from a court of record
- Marriage certificate
On the Road
Once your licensing requirements have been met, a Class M endorsement will be added to your driver's license. Remember... the safe operation of a motorcycle requires practiced skill, knowledge, and a respectful understanding of the limitations imposed by the operator, the machine, and the environment.
